The Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) hosted the 2023 meeting of this annual gathering, which celebrates the historic friendship between Nakahama Manjiro and Captain William Whitfield.
THE STORY
Manjiro was a 14-year-old fisherman when he was marooned off Japan’s coast in 1841. Whitfield rescued the young Manjiro, brought him back with him to the United States and shared his own home with him there. Manjiro later began a trailblazer in emerging US-Japan relations, and the Grassroots Summit celebrates this relationship.
JASCO is dedicated to celebrating the US-Japan relationship in Ohio, where Japan is the largest foreign direct investor and nearly 11,000 Japanese residents live and work. We invite you to join us as we showcase what Ohio has to offer to the world, and celebrate the ongoing friendship between the US and Japan!
The 2023 Japan-America Grassroots Summit was jointly organized by the JASCO and the Tokyo-based John Manjiro-Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange (CIE).

Hosting the Japan-America Grassroots Summits requires the entire region to come together. We are Grateful to all the local session cities (Bellefontaine, Columbus, Delaware, Dublin, Findlay, Bluffton, Marysville, Sidney, Troy) & all host families for their warm hospitality in opening their hearts and homes for our Japanese guests!
